my photo. I guess they don’t do photo credits…?Atop Mt. Cristo Rey
(via fuckyeahep)
i need to go up there soon. my mom, an aunt, the judge, and about 20 cousins went on a pilgrimage one march just so we could say we went with the relatives. around the top at the base of the sculpture is a ring of red sponsor tiles, and one has the names of my mom’s family—gonzalez. i have cousins that camp out the night before the semi-annual pilgrimages to aid with chasing bandits away for those two weekends.
the year we went, we began climbing around 5:30 a.m. and reached the top just in time to see a beautiful sunrise. along the way, i looked down to see mexican vendors haul their boxes of water and fruits on their backs in order to sell to the faithful. their climb was almost vertical and for me, seeing them was one of the most inspiring parts of our climb.
afterward, we went to my aunt’s home where other women were cooking menudo, heating tamales, and brewing coffee. it was one of the only times the judge was able to meet her gonzalez cousins. she had a good time even though she was skeptical about the whole climb-to-the-mountaintop thing with your relatives.

this guadalupe statue is quite new and i haven’t been able to photograph it yet. thankfully, i found this image to be about the nicest and most evocative of the guadalupe, her spirit, and those who pray for her intercession to her son. and, the photographer kindly allows redistribution with attribution. thanks, denise womack avila!
when we lived in santa fe, the guadalupe church was a venue for the santa fe chamber music festival. there, we were able to attend andré-michel schub’s performance of bach’s goldberg variations. it was the first time we had heard the variations, which i’ve loved ever since. at the time, schub had either won the van cliburn immediately before or after the festival performance. here is his final and winning performance for that competition.
